Seems to take over 5 minutes with the current release of Leopard. That is with no applications running when I start the shutdown process. I booted up my laptop this morning and the screen's brightness was at the lowest setting (without being off). I could barely read to login and it would not let me adjust the brightness until after I had logged in. Even then, I had to wait a good 2-3 mins after login to be able to adjust it.
